Big Jake's Corner was an improvisational set open to any performer after 5:30 at the Tuscany Tavern corner. Originally a place for Big Jake Humphries to lead sea shanties, other performers came to present other activities such as poetry reading or acrobatics. A favorite activity was to spot couples together and incite the male to profess undying romantic love for his lady in as eloquent and flowery a manner as possible. Often the performer would (a la Cyrano) talk the male patron through the romance. The bit would end with a big, romantic kiss and many smiles all around. The group song performance sets that self-generated at this venue would often rival the minstrel's jam, a few hundred feet to the north at the Midsummer Stage, and the group was, on more than one occassion, asked to move further away.
