Guilde of St. Michael (Bristol)
From Renaissance Faire Wiki
The Guilde of St. Michael, founded in 1995 by Brian Brecht and Tom Charney, is the military guild at the Bristol Renaissance Faire. Their aim is to present the impression of a militia of England prior to the onset of the first Spanish Armada.
The group, currently directed by Rick Kakouris, is composed mostly of pikemen, but do have a small contingent of shot and artillery. England did not have a standing army at that time, and relied on the strength of the "'Trayned Bandes", who acted as a sort of National Guard. The trained bands were made up mostly of the middle-class, who gathered together once a month to train as a unit, and to socialize with other town-folk. Their main place of interaction is at the BRF, but they also do presentations and demonstrations at other faires, schools, and community events.
