The Southern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire was established in 1963 to provide a living history experience for children and adults alike. This original faire was conceived by Phyllis Patterson and the non-profit Living History Center (LHC). For years LHC educated and entertained Californians, doing what they could to reenact an English village of the 1580s while also offering food, things to buy, street actors and stage shows. It went on to inspire similar events across the United States and, since its inception, more than 5 million people from around the world have visited Southern California’s Renaissance Pleasure Faire, averaging approximately twenty thousand participants each weekend.

The original site of the faire was on the Paramount Ranch site in Agoura, California. It later moved to Glen Helen Pavilion in Devore, California where it stayed until 2005. The faire then moved to its current location at Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area in Irwindale, California.

Prior to moving to Irwindale, the in-fantasy setting of the faire was Chipping-Under-Oakwood in Derbyshire. The current in-fantasy setting is meant to be Port Deptford, London .
